What Is in One’s Mouth Is Not in One’s Hand
Apparently, the Sumerians understood the difference between talking about something and actually doing it.
This ancient proverb reduces that idea to one wonderfully compact observation:
“What is in one’s mouth is not in one’s hand.”
In modern language: action, not words. Saying something and actually having done it are two very different things.
The proverb is preserved in Sumerian proverb collections and is independently attested on a manuscript from Susa, MDP 27 89. The same proverb also appears in ETCSL Collection 3 as proverb 3.177.
English translation:
“What is in one’s mouth is not in one’s hand.”
Sumerian Proverb • Anonymous Attested at Susa • MDP 27 89 Parallel: ETCSL Collection 3 • Proverb 3.177
The cuneiform takes center stage in this WSR Tees design, with the translation beneath it—a thought from ancient Mesopotamia that still works perfectly well as advice today.
