Nefarious Nelly’s Speakeasy
My Grandma Nell was a character. Colorful, to say the least.
She was my dad’s mom, and during Prohibition she ran as many as three different speakeasies in the Kansas City area. She made moonshine and bathtub gin and, at one point, ran an arcade with a shooting gallery.
And this was back when a shooting gallery was exactly what it sounded like.
They used real rifles and real ammunition. Grandma Nell gave me my first gun—a 1901 Remington Gallery Special with a hexagonal barrel, chambered for .22 Short. I still remember it.
Nell didn’t become much more conventional with age.
Even into her eighties, she carried a Saturday night special in her purse and drove a hot-rodded 1971 Dodge Charger. She wore the brightest red lipstick she could find, always did her hair and makeup, and wore jeweled horn-rimmed glasses. She looked like she’d stepped out of the Roaring Twenties and simply decided there was no compelling reason to change.
She was not going to go quietly.
Nefarious Nelly’s Speakeasy never actually existed under that name, but the woman who inspired it certainly did. This design is my tribute to Grandma Nell, her colorful life, and the stories I’m fortunate enough to still be able to tell about her.
